Application for admission at Newcastle High School is open for all qualified applicants who have met the school’s admission requirements for the 2023-2024 academic year. Academics at Newcastle High School

The primary focus of any school is teaching and learning. All other activities are secondary but are necessary for the whole development of a learner. There is a long tradition of academic excellence at NHS and they will continue with this mandate to deliver quality public education to all learners.

The school’s academic ethos encourages their students to independent thought, interest, and self-disciplined study, thereby promoting real academic readiness for tertiary study and life in general. It also encourages a high degree of academic self-motivation – one of the many reasons why their pupils are regular winners and finalists in academic competitions. Their pupils take part in numerous academic pursuits beyond the classroom: Maths, Science, and Accounting Olympiads, various competitions, and Eisteddfods are all extensions of the classroom. Pupils regularly earn places in the top few in national competitions.

Grades 8 and 9 do all 8 learning areas, the only choice being Afrikaans or isiZulu as a first additional language. Their Arts and Culture learning area focuses on the two art forms Music and Visual Arts, which a child can pursue in the FET phase (grades 10-12).

In the FET (grade 10 -12) phase, NHS offers a conventional academic education with a curriculum spanning a wide spectrum of subjects to suit individual talents and preferences. The academic standards expected are high and are reflected in the excellent achievements of their learners and teachers in public examinations and national competitions.

Acceptance criteria

1. The First Language of the learner at his/her current school must be ENGLISH HOME LANGUAGE
2. For a child to be eligible for admission to this school, they must comply with the admissions criteria as determined by the Governing Body (please ask the secretary/admin for criteria).
3. Acceptance at Newcastle High School is NOT GUARANTEED
4. If any facts reflected in this application form prove to be incorrect, the School reserves the right to reject the application, whether or not the application has been previously accepted. It is an offense to make a false statement about any item pertinent to this application, such as the age and identity of a child, place of residence, guardianship, or previous academic achievement.
5. By making this application for admission to the School, the learner and the parents accept that on such admission, the learner will be bound by the Code of Conduct and Regulations of the School throughout the learner’s stay at the School.
6. You must submit certified copies of the required documents to the secretary, with the completed application to the secretary.
7. Parent as defined in S.A. Schools Act, No 84 of 1996

• The person legally entitled to custody of a learner; or
• The person who undertakes to fulfill the obligations of a person referred to in paragraphs (a) and (b) towards the learner’s education at school.
• This application will only be processed once all relevant documentation has been received.
